What Is Named Entity Recognition?
Named Entity Recognition, or NER, is how AI systems identify and track specific “things” in text, such as brands, services, audiences, locations, programs, and named concepts.
When an AI system reads your site, it is constantly deciding:
- Is this a brand or a service?
- Is this the same thing I saw earlier, or something different?
- Do these references belong together?
NER is the mechanism that answers those questions. It determines whether AI systems correctly connect meaning across pages or fragment it into unrelated parts.
Why NER Matters for AI
Humans understand context intuitively. AI does not. To a human, phrases such as “Paid Search,” “Search Advertising,” and “Google Search campaigns” may feel interchangeable. To an AI system, they can appear as separate entities unless the meaning is made explicit and consistent.
